It will give them major approval penalties but also provide a huge chunk of industry - making it a valuable specialized planet. Another faction which has researched the ability to colonize a lava planet, for instance, will find that appealing. Ironically, the best planet types for you are already available from turn 1. Try to get systems with a lot of hot planets - these are the best for you. Being able to settle lava and ash planets from the very start of the game fits very well with this. Unlike other factions who need industry to build things and food to grow, riftborn need industry to build things and more industry to grow. They're all about industry since their population growth is a construction you must build. Riftborn are really not weak in terms of planets, the starting planet types they can settle are really the best planet types available for them. You can use singularities on the same system over and over again without any trouble - there is only one faction which can exhaust systems, and that is the Cravers. You can only have three singularities at a time, and generally speaking it's a good idea to try and keep all 3 up as soon as your resource generation can support doing so.
